ASRM Welcomes Dr. Christos Coutifaris as President

San Antonio, TX - Christos Coutifaris became President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine today at the Society’s Scientific Congress and Expo in San Antonio.
Dr. Coutifaris is the Celso Ramon Garcia Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Coutifaris received MD and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility both at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
He has directed clinical/translational research programs in reproduction under continuous NIH grant support for more than 25 years. His research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human trophoblast function and on determining the epigenetic basis of abnormal placentation and adverse perinatal outcomes following treatments with Assisted Reproductive Technologies. In addition, he has been the principal investigator for the University of Pennsylvania Reproductive Medicine Unit of NICHD’s Reproductive Medicine Network for over 20 years.
Earlier this month, Dr. Coutifaris became a newly elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. He currently serves as chair of the oversight committee for the Perinatal Research Branch of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He has been a member of several federal advisory committees including the Reproductive Endocrinology Study Section and he has participated in and chaired several special emphasis review panels of the National Institutes of Health. He was a member of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was President of ASRM’s affiliated organization, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and was on the Executive Board of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Coutifaris will focus his presidency year on finalizing the research agenda initiated by the ASRM strategic planning process, further develop and strengthen the relationship with WHO, and continue to expand ASRM’s global outreach and access to care initiatives. He states, “I look forward to working with everybody in the Society, with governmental agencies and with our global sister organizations to promote excellence in the practice of reproductive medicine and to develop the agenda for the training and research of the next generation of specialists in the field.” Outgoing President Richard J. Paulson said, “I have great confidence in Dr. Coutifaris’ ability to lead ASRM and express my gratitude for having had the opportunity to serve in this capacity this past year. His contributions to the Society have been numerous, and I know he will be an outstanding President.” Dr. Richard Reindollar, ASRM’s Chief Executive Officer added “Dr. Coutifaris has tremendous respect among his colleagues in our field. Given his various appointments to national organizations and committees, he also has developed central relationships with many policy experts over the years. I look forward to collaborating with him as we continue the important work of the Society.”
