ART - Assisted Reproductive Technology

Assisted Hatching - Micromanipulation process that dissolves part of the zona coating with an acid solution. Performed just prior to embryo transfer.

Cryopreservation - Freezing of a specimen, either semen or embryos

ET - Embryo transfer

FET - Frozen embryo transfer

GIFT - Gamete intrafallopian transfer

GnRH - Gonadotropin releasing hormone

hCG - Human chorionic gonadotropin

HSG - Hysterosalpingogram

ICSI - Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, a form of micromanipulation

IVF - In vitro fertilization, fertilization and early embryo development occurring outside the body

Micromanipulation - Microscopic treatment of individual oocytes, sperm or embryos in an effort to improve fertilization

Retrieval - Transvaginal aspiration of the (oocyte) egg from each follicle, performed under ultrasound guidance

TET - Tubal embryo transfer

Transfer - The return of fertilized embryos to the uterine cavity

Trial Transfer - Measurement performed to determine the length and direction of the uterine cavity

ZIFT - Zygote intrafallopian transfer
